RV Beginners Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Trip

Never driven an RV before? This complete beginner guide covers everything from choosing your first rig to your first night on the road without the stress.

Your first RV trip will feel overwhelming until it does not. Most people discover after the first night that the learning curve is short and the rewards are immediate. Here is everything you need to know before you go.

Renting Before Buying

Before committing to an RV purchase, rent one for a week. RV rental platforms like Outdoorsy and RVshare list privately owned rigs at reasonable daily rates. A week in a rental reveals exactly what size, layout, and features you actually need versus what looked appealing in a showroom. Most experienced RVers recommend renting at least two different types before buying.

Driving an RV for the First Time

Class C motorhomes and travel trailers require adjustment but are manageable for first-timers. The key rules: drive slower than you think necessary, allow triple the normal following distance, start braking much earlier than in a car, and make wide turns at every intersection. Most campgrounds have pull-through sites specifically designed for drivers not yet comfortable with reversing. Use them without embarrassment.

Setting Up Camp

Levelling the RV is the first priority β€” an unlevel fridge damages the compressor over time. Level blocks or ramps under the tyres handle most sites. Connect shore power if available. Connect water with a pressure regulator if staying more than a night. The entire setup process takes 20-30 minutes once familiar.

Black Tank Basics

The black tank holds toilet waste and is the aspect of RV life that most intimidates beginners and is the least problematic in practice. Use RV-specific toilet paper only. Add a tank treatment product after each dump. Dump when the tank reaches two-thirds full. The process is quick and straightforward once done the first time.
