Best RV Destinations in the USA: 10 Must-Visit Parks and Campgrounds

From the red rock canyons of Utah to the Pacific Coast Highway β€” the 10 best RV destinations in the United States that belong on every RVer's bucket list.

The United States offers some of the world's greatest RV destinations β€” vast national parks, stunning coastal drives, and desert landscapes that simply have to be seen to be believed. Here are ten destinations that belong on every RVer's bucket list.

1. Zion National Park, Utah

Zion is arguably America's most spectacular national park and an absolute must for RVers. The towering sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, and the famous Angels Landing hike draw millions of visitors annually. The Watchman Campground inside the park offers stunning views and access to the park shuttle. Book 6+ months in advance β€” this campground fills immediately.

2. Glacier National Park, Montana

Going-to-the-Sun Road through Glacier National Park is one of the world's great scenic drives. Note that vehicles over 21 feet are restricted from the full road β€” plan accordingly. The park's campgrounds book up instantly on reservation day. Many RVers base themselves at Apgar or St. Mary campgrounds and explore the park by shuttle.

3. Florida Keys

The Overseas Highway stretching 113 miles from Miami to Key West is a bucket list RV drive. Bahia Honda State Park offers some of the most beautiful campsites in Florida with access to crystal clear Atlantic waters. The Keys are best visited October through April β€” summer brings oppressive heat and hurricane season.

4. Moab, Utah

Moab is RV adventure central. Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park are both within easy reach. The surrounding BLM land offers extensive free camping (boondocking) on stunning desert landscapes. Mountain biking on the famous Slickrock Trail and whitewater rafting on the Colorado River round out the activities.

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

Driving Highway 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles in an RV is a bucket list experience. The Big Sur coastline is simply breathtaking. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park campground sits in a stunning redwood grove above the Pacific. The drive is best done northbound to keep the ocean on your right for the best views.

6. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone is the world's first national park and still one of its most extraordinary. Geysers, hot springs, wildlife including bison and wolves, and dramatic landscapes make it unlike anywhere else. The park's campgrounds fill quickly β€” Madison and Fishing Bridge RV Park are the most popular. Allow at least a week to do Yellowstone justice.

7. Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia/North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches 469 miles through the Appalachian Mountains with no commercial traffic and stunning views around every bend. Numerous campgrounds line the route. Fall foliage season in October transforms the parkway into one of the most colourful drives in the country.

Tips for National Park RVing

Purchase the America the Beautiful annual pass ($80) for unlimited entry to all national parks and federal recreation areas β€” it pays for itself after two or three park visits. Book campgrounds exactly six months in advance when reservations open. If you can't get a reservation, arrive at the campground before 10am when overnight campers check out and queue for a first-come spot.
